title = "The Safety Case",
abstract = "The safety case for nuclear systems is a written expression of safety, demonstrating the protective measures against uncontrolled radiological releases. In simple terms, safety equates to design resilience, which must be coordinated with function and performance to form the foundation of a viable product. Given the real and perceived consequences of failure relating to providing power from nuclear energy, design resiliency or safety takes precedence over function and performance. As such, the introduction of safety-related characteristics early in the design process is essential to reduce uncertainties associated with safety throughout the product lifecycle.",
