Özet

Fungemia presents with significant morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised patients. We tested the in-vitro susceptibility of yeast strains isolated from blood cultures in February 1996 to November 2000 (n=107) in our hospital. Standard mycological methods were used for isolation and identification of the isolates. Amphotericin B, fluconazole, and itraconazole susceptibility tests were done in accordance with NCCLS microdilution methodology (M27A). Of 107 isolates, 98.1% and 1.9% were of Candida and Trichoporon spp., respectively. Among Candida isolates, most frequently isolated species was C. albicans (54.3%), followed by C. tropicalis (17.1%), C. parapsilosis (9.5%), C. glabrata (7.6%), C. lusitaniae (4.8%), C. krusei (2.9%), C. guilliermondii (1.9%), C. kefyr (1%), and C. lipolytica (1%). Except for the C. krusei which is intrinsically resistant to fluconazole, none of the Candida isolates were resistant to fluconazole or itraconazole. However, three (C. albicans, C. tropicalis, C. guilliermondii) and eight (C. albicans, C. tropicalis, C. guilliermondii) of the Candida strains were dose-dependent susceptible to fluconazole and itraconazole, respectively, after 24 hours of incubation. These results suggest that, while most of our isolates currently remain susceptible to antifungal agents, antifungal susceptibility testing appears beneficial in determination of dose-dependent susceptible isolates which may Clinically respond to the corresponding antifungal agent administered at higher doses.
