Abstract

A study was made of measured stratigraphic sections of these flysch deposits, which lie SW, S and E of Ankara, Turkey. Petrographic descriptions and XRD data on clay fractions of samples collected from the flysch series are presented. The sandstones are mostly of greywacke and subordinate greywacke type, whereas the limestones are mostly biosparites and biomicrites. Vertical and lateral variations of clay fractions were investigated, and smectite was found to be the dominant clay mineral in the Upper Cretaceous formation, while corrensite and 14s-14c mixed series are dominant in the Palaeocene and Lower Eocene series. Smectite is again dominant in the Middle Eocene series. -P.Br.
