Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of cognitive and motor dual tasks on gait in individuals with transfemoral amputation. Methods: People with unilateral transfemoral amputation who were 18 years of age or older included in the study. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment Scale (MOCA) was used to assess cognitive functions. Gait analysis was performed by footprint method to determine the spatiotemporal characteristics of gait. Timed Up and Go Test (TUGT) was used to assess functional performance. All evaluations were repeated with no additional task, with the second cognitive task, and with the second motor task. Repeated measures of variance analysis and Freidman test were used to examine the effect of the dual task. Results: Twenty-four individuals with a mean age of 51.20±15.83 years were included in the study. Mean MOCA score was 23.95±2.14. Gait speed, sound side foot angle and TUGT times were significantly affected both in motor and dual cognitive tasks. Amputated side step length, support base, and tempo showed a significant change only with the cognitive dual task, and sound side step length showed a significant change only with the motor dual task (p<0.05). When compared to the dual task performance effects, speed and tempo were seen to be more influenced during the dual cognitive task (p<0.05). Conclusion: In individuals with the transfemoral amputation, gait parameters are affected during cognitive and motor dual tasks. The decrease in walking performance with dual tasks suggests that the walking skill is not sufficiently automated, which is thought to be positively affected by physiotherapy and rehabilitation practices.
