Abstract
In today’s global society, poverty continues to pose a significant challenge for many nations. However, incorporating artificial intelligence (AI)-powered technologies has the potential to revolutionize the fight against poverty. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that the United Nations has determined are vital problems that require immediate attention. Poverty alleviation is the first SDG that AI-based technologies can achieve. This study categorizes the underlying roots of poverty into educational, economic, quality of life, environmental, social, and political factors, providing a detailed explanation of AI-based solutions for each category. While the advantages of AI in poverty alleviation are noteworthy, some apprehensions, including biased training data, safety, privacy, financial costs, sustainability, overreliance, and knowledge and skill requirements, must be considered. In this study, the benefits and drawbacks of AI utilization on the underlying root causes of poverty are discussed in detail, with a road map for government institutions working toward poverty alleviation.
