Abstract

The role of the French language and theater is unique in the formation and strengthening of social and cultural relations between Turkey and France. This chapter provides a brief history of the increasing presence of the French language and culture in the Ottoman State and then modern Turkey through schools and institutions, which were instrumental in spreading them. It also presents an extensive analysis of the influence of Molière’s plays on the evolution of the modern Turkish theatre with examples of their Turkish counterparts and writers who translated and adapted them to stage.
