Abstract

Purpose: The aim of the study is to investigate the effects of Hatha yoga on flexibility and balance of healthy women. Material and methods: 25 volunteer women between 30-45 years of age who did not have any health problems attended this study. Demographic characteristics, flexibility and balance assessments were done before the yoga sessions. The subjects participated in the yoga sessions for 8 weeks for one hour, 2 times a week. The assessments were repeated after yoga sessions were completed. Results: There was no difference between the groups in regards to demographic characteristics. Significant difference were found in flexibility values of all subjects between pre and post yoga sessions (p<0.05). A significant difference was found between pre and post yoga sessions during balance test with closed eyes on right and left extremities respectively (p<0.05). Conclusion: To conclude, it can be said that extensive work load and stress increases the tension on musculoskeletal structures and leads to some degree of loss in balance and stability. We found that there were flexibility and balance problems in our subjects and these problems benefited from the yoga program as shown by the parameters. The results of this study show that it is possible to use yoga based exercises in healthy subjects for preventive means.
