Abstract

Migrations have attracted many researchers from various disciplines, and have been subject to numerous studies. Yet, the analysis of the studies conducted in Turkey on this subject reveals that migrations in the Ottoman period have been neglected. There has not yet been a specific study on farm-breaker tax as one of the important actors in these migrations. However, decrees on 'farm-breaker' in the Ottoman sanjak code of laws can shed light on the internal migrations that took place in the Ottoman territories. Especially, the split of the agricultural lands in the 17th century known as the time of change and crisis and the following time period, the 'farmbreaker' status of villagers, who had deserted their homelands after Jelali Revolts, deeply affected the timar system and led to a serious internal migration.
