Abstract

Life expectancy is prolonged in HIV -infected individuals under appropriate antiretroviral treatment, and today, it is considered a chronic disease. Individuals with chronic HIV infection have an increased frequency of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, and cardiovascular diseases, as well as infection -related disorders. A multidisciplinary and holistic approach to the management of HIVinfected patients will ensure appropriate control of related diseases and reduce the burden on physicians. Infection specialists who manage the treatment of HIV -infected individuals in centers where a multidisciplinary approach cannot be achieved are also faced with the management of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, and cardiovascular diseases. It is accepted that the risk of developing atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease due to HIV -related or non -HIV -related causes is higher compared to individuals without HIV infection and is a factor for the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. In this review, the pathogenesis of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in the presence of HIV infection, the determination of risk factors and cardiovascular disease risks, and the modification of risk factors are discussed in light of current guidelines and clinical studies.
