Abstract

Quartz minerals extracted from ignimbrites belonging to Tahar units of Ürgüp formation in Kapadokya, Turkey, were dated by electron spin resonance (ESR). The obtained equivalent dose of the Al center was larger than that of Ti center in the experimental error. Annealing experiments indicate that artificial γ-ray irradiation produces less stable Al centers than Ti centers in both irradiated and non-irradiated quartz. Ages of the samples different in sizes were obtained by using both Al and Ti centers. It is concluded that the obtained age using Ti centers is more reliable, and the order of the age (106 years) falls into Pliocene epoch in the time scale.
