Abstract
In this study, it is aimed to investigate the variations of some parameters of the Neogene volcanosedimentary rocks under freezing-thawing cycles around Eskisehur-Yazilikaya region where the historical Midas Monument is also located. Taking into account the climatic conditions, influences of freezing-thawing cycles on porosity water absorbtion by weight, stake durability, index uniaxial compressive strength and Schmidt hardness of these rocks have been investigated in the laboratory conditions. Fresh rock samples were subjected to various numbers of freeze-thaw cycles and the relations between the cycles, and the variations in some physical and mechanical parameters of the samples determined in the laboratory were investigated. Two different levels of ignimbrites were identified according to their welding degrees in the study area. The white ignimbrites at the lower level are more affected by freezing-thawing cycles than the pink ignimbrites at the upper level. The results revealed that freezing and thawing is one of the important processes contributing physical weathering of the ignimbrites studied.
