Abstract
Purpose: The aim of this study is to investigate the short-term effects of stretching on pain, flexibility and range of movement in frozen shoulder. Methods: Thirty-six voluntary subjects diagnosed with frozen shoulder were included. Subjects were randomly separated into two groups; Group 1 (n=19) was received coldpack and posterior capsule stretching exercise, Group 2 (n=17) was received coldpack, posterior and anterior capsule stretching exercises. Pain severity, range of motion and posterior capsule tightness were assessed in one-week follow-up. Results: Group 1 showed decreased pain severity during activity and posterior capsule tightness and increased shoulder flexion and active internal rotation at the end of the week (p<.05). Group 2 showed decreased pain severity during rest and at night, increased abduction and active total elevation (p<.05). There were no differences were found between groups in amount of changes in all parameters (p>.05). Discussion: Short-term stretching exercises were resulted in decreased pain and increased range of motion in frozen shoulder. Posterior and anterior capsule stretching exercises were recommended to apply in early rehabilitation of frozen shoulder based on improvements in active total elevation as a functional outcome.
