Abstract
The current use of wJd is discussed and their limitation are defined. To overcome these limitation, a procedure for the determination of wJd is proposed, because the wJd based surface observation is more realistic than the J v for the determination of block size. The values of wJd for each joint set are summed to obtain the wJd value of the examined rock mass. The wJd value obtained with Palmström's approach is 3.59 joint/m3, while the wJd value determined with the proposed procedure is 4.45 joint/m 3.
