Abstract

This article is devoted to Islamic ornamental patterns in Turkey and Morocco developed at different epochs and in distant areas under the reign of several dynasties ethnically different but having in common the Islamic culture. These two countries can be considered as representatives of the Islamic art of the Eastern and Western Muslim world. The purpose of this article is to analyze and compare the three themes of decoration encountered in Turkey and Morocco: calligraphy, stylized floral and geometric patterns. Our analysis, classification and comparison were mainly focused on symmetry groups of finite and infinite patterns and the Muqarnas (Stalactites). The materials, the color used and the historical aspect were also briefly discussed along the paper.
