Abstract

Rock falls are the natural hazards which have potential for structural damages and casualties. The slopes of the Zir Valley, which is the study area, are the slopes of the Ankara province Sincan (Yenikent)-Temelli highway, and it is the route of heavily used by many heavy cargo, medical waste vehicles and personal vehicles. The lava front collapse products of the Zir Valley created fairy chimney-like geological formations that created high slopes in the region. Rock falls occur in these formations. Zir Valley was registered as a Natural Site-Sustainable Conservation and Controlled Use Area and it is also an old settlement area in that region. The protection of the region is important not only for rockfalls, but also for geological heritage. Within the scope of this study, first of all, the rockfall source areas were determined, fallen rock blocks and their locations were assessed by field studies. The digital elevation model (DEM) of the study area and its vicinity was obtained by Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). The runout direction, runout distance, jump heights, velocities and energies of the rock blocks that have the potential to fall from the rockfall source areas determined within the scope of the study were evaluated by many modeling studies, and three-dimensional analyzes were implemented and mapped for the prediction of these values. According to these assessments, the blocks reach high velocity and energy, and when this situation is considered; the rockfall source area is very close to the highway, which is the element at risk, prefabricated structures, water tanks, fountains, gardens, and the structures in the area such as cultivated field. The study will give significant contribution to the literature in order to carry out the necessary studies for the protection of a highway with a heavy vehicle traffic and other elements at risk in the region from rockfalls.
